[UK] PhD Studentships in Durability of marine paints for offshore oil tankers

Cranfield University currently have an vacancy for a high calibre individual to undertake an exciting PhD research studentship in the area of corrosion protection films.The research will be conducted in collaboration with the sponsor, International Paints, who have a world wide presence in this coatings field.

This multidisciplinary project will use state of the art techniques to establish the processes by which cracks develop in marine protective films under service conditions. The research is vital to the durability of oil tankers with double hull construction. This tanker design places unprecedented demands on the fatigue durability of epoxy based corrosion protection films.

Entry requirements

Applicants should have a background in physics, materials or mechanical engineering and have or expect to gain a minimum of a First or Second Class UK Honours degree or equivalent.

Funding

Supported by an EPSRC DTA bursary, this studentship will cover the tuition fees and provide a bursary of up to £17,000 p.a. for three years dependent upon qualifications, experience and project. The studentship is ONLY open to UK and EU candidates. EU applicants may be eligible for a full award if they have been in full-time education or in employment in the UK throughout the three years preceding the start date of the programme of research study.
