Italy. A research fellowship is available at the Department of Physics, under a research project entitled with: Development of a software platform for a rapid detection of sources of unsolicited bulk email (spam) through the analysis of the flux of queries to public databases.

The fellowships is largely sponsored by an industrial entity operating in the field of systems for detection and blocking of email spam. This research is sponsored with the goal of improving the performance of products, but also of building a tool to perform quantitative analysis on various aspects of the spam distribution mechanism that can turn to be useful for several operators in this area.

The fellowships (one year) covers the first part of the work for a project whose duration will presumably be two years. The goal in the first year is to build a system to collect and process in real time a sustained and intense (of the order of tens of Mbps) flux of data coming from a network of Internet servers, containing important informations on the international email traffic — such as the time behavior of the emission of individual spam sources and their aggregation in botnets. The following year will be dedicated to the analysis of data collected by the system.

Candidates must have the equivalent of an italian specialistic degree in computer science or related area, and:

  • a solid experience in C programming
  • knowledge of Unix/Linux system libraries
  • knowledge of TCP/IP, client/server architectures, DNS
  • knowledge of SQL databases
  • familiarity with development on Unix/Linux platforms
  • enthusiasm and willingness to work in an international setting on a project with possible important outcomes.

The fellowships amount is Euro 18,000.00 for 12 months, covering a period going approximately from april 2008 to march 2009. The work location will be Udine, in north-eastern Italy.

Application Deadline: 19 February 2008
