UK. Several PhD studentships are available for students pursuing PhD study within The Plasma Physics Research Group, Physics Department, Faculty of Physical Sciences. Each year the group accept 6-7 postgraduate students for their 3 years PhD course.

Registration is normally at the start of October, to coincide with the PG lecture course which runs throughout the first year. However under special circumstances entry can be delayed.

The Ph.D. course (no M.Sc.) lasts for three years. Postgraduate Plasma Physics lectures are on one day per week during term time of your first year.

You are initially registered for M.Phil, then transferred to a Ph.D. at the end of your first year. To transfer successfully you are required to:

  • produce a 20-40 page report as agreed with your supervisor, to include:(i) critical review of literature in you research area;
    (ii) specific research proposal;
    (iii) research schedule.
  • sit a viva to test your knowledge of the course work and your report.

Writing up time is now severely limited, and you are expected to submit the thesis in a maximum of four years, but ideally in three.

Eligibility
Qualification (normally): Good physics degree (1st or 2(i) of 65% or over) or MSc.

Useful background for:

  • Experimenters – electronics, optics, mechanical design, data analysis, research laboratory experience.
  • Theorists – maths, computer modelling and simulation.
  • General - enthusiastic, dogged, independent thinker, ability to communicate, team member.

Available Funding

  • EPSRC quota studentships: fees and maintenance
  • EPSRC CASE studentships: fees and maintenance
  • EPSRC project studentships: occasionally awarded as part of a research grant and equivalent to a quota studentship. These may be used for EU and overseas students but will only cover the value of UK student fees.
  • Contracts: We can often negotiate full or partial funding via a contract with outside institutions (eg. JET, UKAEA Fusion, etc.).
