PhD Scholarships in Sociology, Anthropology and Applied Social Sciences

These doctoral scholarships are provided by the Adam Smith Research Foundation for candidates within the Sociology, Anthropology and Applied Social Sciences Department, Faculty of Law, Business and Social Sciences. Up to 4 PhD Scholarships within five research themes: 1. Public Policy, Governance and Social Justice, 2. Work, Ethics and Technology, 3.People Places and Change, 4. Macroeconomics, Business and Finance, 5. Legal and Political Thought

The Scholarships are offered from September 2008 and are tenable for up to three years (two years if doctoral research has already commenced). A Scholarship award offers the student a maintenance stipend equivalent to the Economic and Social Research Council award for a single person and payment of tuition fees at the UK/EU rate of £3,168 or the overseas rate of £8,800. (2006/07 rates shown).

The Adam Smith Research Foundation has been established to promote and sustain research within the UK, European and international arenas. The Foundation promotes the engagement of staff in key policy debates and in shaping policy for the future. It provides the environment in which to foster further links between the Faculty’s disciplines and supports the development of interdisciplinary research both within and beyond the University.

Application Procedures

There is no special application form for ASRF studentships. When a Department accepts a candidate for doctoral study it will decide whether to enter the candidate into the competition for an ASRF Scholarships.

The closing date is expected to be 1 May 2008 and applications to Departments should be submitted as far in advance of that date as possible. Current doctoral students should alert their department that they wish to be considered for an ASRF Scholarships, submit a research proposal and gather references and they will be considered by Departments alongside new applicants. Each department is permitted to enter up to 4 candidates.

The Awards Committee will consider:

• The candidate’s Faculty application form
• research proposal setting out questions or hypotheses to be addressed, methodology to be used and brief timetable. (A maximum of 1000 words will be considered.)
• two academic references
• statement of support supplied by the Sociology, Anthropology and Applied Social Sciences Department

Successful applicants will be informed of the outcome by end of June 2008. The award of the Scholarships carries with it certain obligations to participate in activities in the ASRF and it will be a condition of progress to subsequent year funding that holders of ASRF scholarships fulfil these obligations.
