Geological Survey of Norway, Norway

A permanent research position and a 2-year post doctorate position in geophysics are vacant with the Geoscience Division. We seek candidates with a doctorate degree in geophysics, or in geology with a strong emphasis on geophysical training. A sound knowledge of regional geology is beneficial to secure a good level of scientific communication with other team members. Experience from research activities or industry projects are important. The positions are vacant from July 1st 2008.

Permanent position – researcher
The Survey acquires, processes and interprets magnetic and gravity data on a regional scale. The work of the researcher will involve mapping and research activities on both the Norwegian land areas and the continental shelf. The successful candidate will acquire, process and interpret geophysical data in a cross-disciplinary, team-working environment. We are especially interested in candidates with experience in one or more of the following subject areas: research projects, regional mapping and petroleum and mineral exploration. He will also be involved in the maintenance of the national repositories for regional geophysical data. The researcher must play an active role in designing and leading Geological Survey projects.

Post-doctorate position
We seek a creative, geoscientist whose research quantitatively addresses continental margin evolution and breakup processes. Areas of interests include, but are not limited to the use and joint interpretation of recent seismic and potential field data offshore Norway. The post-doctoral project is funded by StatoilHydro. A Ph.D. in geoscience is required at the time of appointment. The candidates should have a strong experience in applied geophysics and geodynamics. A proved experience in continental margin investigation and/or particularly its continent-ocean transition will be a requisite. Good understanding of seismic geometries and amplitudes, structural geology and tectonics of rifted system is mandatory. Complementary knowledge of potential field techniques and modelling are also welcomed. Experience from petroleum industry will be appreciated but is not necessary.

Both positions
The candidates for both positions should be open-minded team players with the capacity to learn, mentor and discuss ideas with others. Interpersonal skills are required, as is the ability to work within a dynamic and multinational team consisting of geologists and geophysicists. You will also need to be motivated and able to work and travel on your own, when required. The ability to learn new software and adapt to changes in software packages is vital.

Proficiency in English, both written and spoken, is a prerequisite for both positions. The successful candidates should preferentially have records of publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals. Research staff is encouraged to participate in the international scientific arena through the presentation and publication of scientific articles and maps.

NGU encourages applications from female scientists. We can offer a favourable working environment, unique scientific challenges and good possibilities for participation in international forums and in further education programmes. A day-care facility is run by and for NGU employees. Salary is dependent on qualification and experience
