Germany. Two year doctoral fellowships has been made available by the Foundation to support outstanding young scientists who conduct basic research in the fields of biology, medicine or chemistry. The research projects could be undertaken at renowned institutes in their home country or abroad.

The amount is €1,200.00 per month. In addition, there is an allowance of €100.00/month to cover material costs (travel costs, books, etc.). The fellowship recipient is also entitled to a one-time conference travel allowance of up to €1,000.00. The child supplement is €150.00/month, irrespective of the number of children. Moreover, there is a foreign country supplement of €100.00/month for all European countries and of €200.00/month for the United States.

Eligibility

Young biologists, chemists and medical students and students of relevant interdisciplinary studies (e.g. bioinformatics, biochemistry) who have completed their studies with excellent grades. They must have completed their studies no longer than two years ago. The fellowship is awarded irrespective of the applicant’s nationality. The dissertation project can be carried out in a country, at a university or institute of their choice.

Fellowship applications have to be submitted in written form in English and in duplicate and include the following documents:

  • Cover page with a short summary of the project (download here as PDF file)
  • Presentation of the research project, including a timetable (no more than ten pages) and references
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Copies of your Abitur certificate (school-leaving exam for entrance to university) and academic certificates including grades (diploma, prediploma and Abitur or Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees alternatively). In case of inernational grading systems, please enclose grade information.
  • Letter of recommendation from the previous research director (e.g. diploma thesis adviser). If the supervisor of the dissertation is the same person who has supervised the work to date, an additional report must be obtained from a university lecturer or from a person in a comparable position.
  • A short explanation for the choice of the guest laboratory indicating that the necessary expert support can be provided and that the requirements for conducting the experiment are met (scientific reputation, laboratory equipment)
  • Statement from the director of the host institute that the planned research project can be carried out at the institute
  • All application material must be submitted in English and in duplicate. Please submit one unstapled application in a clear plastic folder (do not use expensive application folders).

Application deadlines are January 31st and July 31st 2006 (postmarked date). The fellowships scheme is planned to be made available each year.
