Germany. Six master’s scholarships are provided by The International University in Germany (IU). The scholarships available for its master’s programs in computer science and information and communication technology.  The scholarships are sponsored by the internationally renowned computer companies SAP and CAS and cover the tuition fees.

All students, with or without scholarship, will have the opportunity to write their Master’s thesis as researchers within these companies with a good chance not only to get the inside perspective and hands on experience in these global players but also to extent their stay in Germany to receive a job there as soon as their Master’s is completed.

In order to give international applicants a fair chance to apply, the IU has also extended the application deadline for the master’s programs for classes beginning on January 7th, 2009. UK. 3 years Phd studentship commencing in October within The Advanced Technology Institute (ATI). The student will receive a maintenance stipend of £12,600 per year. The student will join the Microwave Research Group in the ATI and will contribute to the UK Silicon Photonics project.

Student will be involved in the design, modelling and measurement of high-speed interconnections fabricated in silicon. Modelling will be done using a combination of circuit and electromagnetic simulators, and measurements made using a vector network analyzer. You will be required to interact with a range of international collaborators in the UK, Europe and the US, and you may be asked to present results of the work at conferences around the world.

Successful candidate will be an Electronic Engineering or Physics graduate, holding a degree in electronic engineering or physics with a minimum upper-second classification.

UK. A PhD studentship is available within the Soft Condensed Matter physics group, Department of Physics. The studenthip is to work on the development of MRI for applications to human skin. The project will be supervised by Prof Peter McDonald.

Applicants should have a 1st class / upper second degree or an MSc in the Physical Sciences and an aptitude for experimental work.

Surrey has developed and houses a unique range of GARField magnetic resonance imaging systems. The objective is to characterise the structure and barrier properties of skin by combining GARField and high field MR microscopy instrumentation and a variety of advanced magnetic resonance techniques including restricted diffusometry and double quantum filtering.

Portugal. 5 years PhD researcher position is currently open by The Centre of Geographical Studies. Expected candidates are those with a PhD on the scientific domains of Physical Geography and other Earth and Atmosphere Sciences, Human Geography and other Social Sciences, Planning and Territorial Management and Geographical Information Systems.

The applicants should have a minimum of postdoctoral three years experience (in exceptional cases, candidates with less than three years research experience might be considered eligible) – and demonstrate the necessary skills and competencies to integrate the scientific research on ongoing and future R&D projects within the above mentioned Research Groups of the CEG (see Fellowship Summary). The successful applicants will be integrated on projects and work programmes of these Research Groups of the CEG (www.ceg.ul.pt)

The Selection Committee will evaluate the applicants and submit to the FCT a list of candidates eligible for contract, according to the merit of the candidature. Later, and according to the Selection Committee decision, the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) will specify the areas of recruitment and the researchers to contract.
